During the early stages of lockdown, when I still had a dissertation to write and exams to sit, I was able to keep the boredom at bay. Even though it was hard to motivate myself to do work, at least I had something to aim for. However, once I was finished I suddenly had all this time on my hands and nothing to do. All of my summer plans were cancelled, jobs and internships were postponed, and I had to find something to do to fill my days – so I wouldn’t go completely mad!
Over these last months, I’ve tried out many different hobbies hoping one would stick: crochet, painting, embroidery, anything to waste away the hours. Over time, I started to get into some of these hobbies, enjoying the time I wasted doing them and attempting to use this time for some positive outcome. That’s when I decided to attempt making jewellery, and fell in love with it.
So, I decided to start a little business – nothing extravagant, just selling some earrings and accessories on Etsy and Depop that I’d been making over the past few months. I’ve been able to practise, and because of this I’m not too bad (even if I do say so myself!). I’ve been able to incorporate some of my other newfound skills – crocheting flower earrings, sewing handmade scrunchies – and have found a productive, and hopefully successful, way to cope with lockdown boredom.
It’s been a lot of fun searching my house (and more recently, my local charity shops) for little trinkets, beads, buttons and fabrics that I can turn into jewellery and accessories. My newest range of earrings made from Barbie doll shoes are super fun and unique! I’ve also been having fun creating cute packaging and little extra gifts to go with every order!
So, if anyone is searching for those perfect earrings that will spice up any outfit and get heads turning or for the ideal gift for a best friend, check me out on Depop at claudia_george or Etsy at NinaValentineDesigns!
