In the midst of the current lockdown situation, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the wealth of uncertainty; and without much social interaction, isolation can start to feel, well quite isolating. So, as they form a large element within my own quarantine routine, I thought I’d share with you some of my favourite podcasts to hopefully brighten up those isolation blues.
Guilt and Shame:
If your podcast interests lie in more informal tones, Guilt and Shame gives its listeners a witty and shameless 90 minutes, breaking down the stereotypical taboos we face on the daily. From pooing to masturbation, comedy duo Gabriel Bisset-Smith and Robert Cawsey as well as Fleabag director and award-winning writer, Vicky Jones (with the occasional appearance of Phoebe Waller-Bridge herself) share their trials and tribulations with society’s ‘unmentionables’.
In a similarly humorous tone, Off Menu consists of well-known comedians James Acaster and Ed Gamble inviting a plethora of guests into their fictional restaurant. Gamble and Acaster (who throughout the series insists on his fictional role as the resident genie) question their customers regarding the contents of their ‘perfect menu’ as well as any elements of nostalgia that lie within their choices.
Kermode and Mayo’s Film Review:
Podcasts can be educational as well as humorous, and Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo’s Film review is the perfect harmony. It’s fans, better known as ‘members of the Church’, receive a reflection on recent cinematic releases, with the two often joined by various Hollywood favourites. Whether you wish to explore different perspectives on your favourite films, or a pre-emptive insight into those you’ve yet to see, this podcast and its slightly more formal setting gives a sense of productivity within quarantine. Just be sure to say hello to Jason Isaacs!
My Dad Wrote a Porno:
Ending on another humorous note, My Dad Wrote a Porno delights its listeners each episode with a chapter reading from amateur erotic novella ‘Belinda Blinked’ written by the father of podcast host Jamie Morton under the pseudonym of ‘Rocky Flintstone’. Joined by James Cooper and Alice Levine, the three relish in the erotic humour of the novel series, providing an entertaining commentary as well as being sporadically joined by various guests in additional ‘Footnote’ episodes in which they delve further into reader’s questions, theories and reviews.
