I love How I Met Your Mother. I love it so much that I have seen every episode nine times, which means I know pretty much everything about it. Specifically, I know that if there’s one thing How I Met Your Mother does well, it’s holiday episodes. From ‘Slapsgiving’ to ‘How Lily Stole Christmas’, the sitcom is guaranteed to keep its audience entertained at any time of year. At Halloween, the two episodes that stand out are ‘The Slutty Pumpkin’ (season 1, episode 6) and ‘The Slutty Pumpkin Returns’ (season 7, episode 8).
The two episodes are set years apart and follow the desperate attempts of Ted, the protagonist, to track down a girl he once met at a Halloween party. He remembers her from her unique ‘Slutty Pumpkin’ costume, which he describes as “carved in strategic places”.
What is so effective, and so typically HIMYM, about these episodes is their focus on Ted’s dedication to finding true love, and his continued disappointment from failed relationships. But also, of course, they celebrate aspects of Halloween that we are all familiar with: subpar house parties and costumes that claim to be sexy, but just look a bit naff.
