Review: VIP Cocktail Evening @ KuPP

KuPP, the Scandinavian coffee shop, restaurant, and bar located in the new Guildhall development, opened its doors to a select few (including Razz) to sample some of their food and drinks this week. Though pricier than your typical coffee shop/bar, the Nordic-inspired cuisine and cocktails were a delight and KuPP should be added to your list of places to wine and dine in Exeter this year.

After welcoming us warmly with some prosecco, our host Blandine explained the story behind the latest addition to the new Guildhall development. The concept focuses on delivering authentic Scandinavian products, often made on-site, in an intimate and distinctly Nordic setting. After opening first in London, KuPP now has venues in Exeter, Oxford, and Southampton. Once the history lesson was over we were then introduced to Luke, who showed us the origins and methods behind three of their traditional Scandinavian cocktails. The pick of the bunch was the Scandinavian Smash, a riff on a Mojito with dill and cucumber. It was delicious and enjoying one at the stylish, minimalist bar is thoroughly recommended. All the staff were extremely knowledgeable about the Scandinavian ingredients and inspiration behind the huge array of drinks, which helped guide us through this uncharted territory.

We were then invited to sit and try a huge range of KuPP’s food offerings. Despite having your usual restaurant selection as well, they focus on Smorgasbords of traditional Scandinavian foods, which are perfect for sharing with friends and trying a variety of dishes. The food was all fresh, unique and a delight – the potted rabbit and smoked charcuterie dishes were particularly fantastic. The hosts left us to leisurely drink away our wine and finish picking at the food, which speaks to the intimate nature that KuPP is trying to encourage among its customers. The concept is one of sharing and community, which makes it a great place to enjoy the unique cocktails and brilliant produce in larger groups. The prices are quite high (perhaps in keeping with the Scandinavian theme!), but don’t let this put you off. Focusing on delivering high quality food and drink, with local ingredients (and even some made in-house), KuPP is a must-visit in the new Guildhall project. It maintains an air of originality, which cannot be said about all the new restaurants in the development. We’d thoroughly recommend it – our thanks must go to Blandine, Luke and all the KuPP staff for a fantastic evening!

Cheers!
