Preview: Michael Kiwanuka at Exeter Phoenix – 18/10/2016

Michael Kiwanuka, Liverpool UK

On Tuesday 18th October, twice Mercury Prize-nominated artist Michael Kiwanuka will grace the stage at the sold-out Exeter Phoenix as part of his intensely busy European, North American and Canadian tour schedule.

Kiwanuka’s most recent release, July’s ‘Love and Hate’ has been received with widespread critical acclaim. The Telegraph described it as “an album that sounds like a world of music in itself”, while Clash Music asserted bold comparisons, saying “There are nods to the early ‘70s work of Curtis Mayfield and Isaac Hayes in these arrangements, comparisons that these songs are bold enough to withstand.” Dwelling on everything from heartbreak to redemption (and all that lies between), the album is as emphatic as it is deeply intimate, a combination that is sure to lend itself to an electrifying live performance.

Kiwanuka has established himself not just as a highly accomplished recording artist, but also a spellbinding live performer, somehow simultaneously bringing an earthy yet elegant quality, firmly cementing himself as one of the foremost vocal talents of the moment.

Even in a time where huge events such as Radio 1’s Big Weekend have appeared on Exeter’s usually humble music scene, Michael Kiwanuka’s performance is set to be a real stand-out moment of the year. Anyone lucky enough to have secured a ticket can expect a truly special night, showcasing one of the most exceptionally talented and honest voices not just in contemporary soul, but on the UK’s music scene as a whole.
