Model behaviour: Jenner and Hadid

Remember the days when Paris Hilton was the celebrity IT girl? It’s time for Hilton to step aside for some new faces to fill our Twitter and Instagram feeds. This time, it’s the models. They have always warranted some ‘celebrity’ status. Kate Moss kicked that off. But now more than ever models appear to be the new ones to watch in the A-list world. What do they have for breakfast? What’s their skincare routine? What new exercise fad are they enjoying? All pivotal questions about what happens when they step off the runway, that everyone is just dying to know. With the media chaos post-fashion week it’s very obvious who is at the top of the pyramid for this new generation of celebrity socialites.

Kendall Jenner. The second youngest of the Kardashian clan, love them or hate them you can’t deny you know them. Jenner has been causing a storm in the fashion industry ever since she broke away from reality television life on ‘Keeping up with the Kardashians’. Starting as a Wilhelmina model it didn’t take Jenner long to secure her place in the editorial world. This year, aged nineteen, she has walked the runway in New York, London, Milan and Paris fashion weeks for the likes of Vera Wang and Oscar de la Renta. Despite acceptance from her audience, rumours suggest that her peers have not been as welcoming. Her roots in reality television and the (notorious) fame of her family name have been mocked by other models during fashion week. The alleged ‘bullies’ felt that Jenner hadn’t earned her place in the industry like the others had. Whilst her name may have helped her career it hardly seems to license cigarettes in her drink. Jealousy just doesn’t look as good as couture. The rising star appears to be working hard and is undeniably flourishing, as proven by the sudden high demand for her. Perhaps it is her name that makes us so intrigued. Or perhaps it’s her bid to create her own brand away from this. Working in high fashion requires something a little different to the commercial Kardashian image. Jenner is poised, beautiful and with all the right friends by her side.

Jenner’s second in command is Gigi Hadid. You can’t Google one of the duo without both twinkling onto your screen. Hadid is the daughter of Yolanda Foster, former model and a real housewife of Beverly Hills, definitely no stranger to the reality television spotlight. With name clearly comes fame. Hadid moved to New York last year to begin her degree in Criminal Psychology. Whilst her NYC apartment is nothing near our university halls, her job is equally hardly what most nineteen year olds are doing alongside their studies. Her first week at The New School coincided with fashion week and the release of her first editorials for CR Fashion Book and Sport Illustrated. An absolute world away from lunch at Pieminster, an afternoon in the library and a TP night out. Whilst it appears that the majority of her time is spent strutting her way up the career runway she can only be commended for studying alongside it. Hadid has already been on the cover of Spanish Vogue and recently became the new face of Maybelline. Like Jenner I’m sure that her parents’ contacts have proven useful for her career. On screen, however, you cannot deny that Hadid sparkles. She has that relaxed confidence that all teenage girls crave. Personality is the best PR and it’s no surprise that Hadid is making such a name for herself.

The two have also been spotted with Victoria’s Secret models Cara Delevingne and Karlie Kloss. Kloss has just announced she’ll be hanging up her wings to attend university, something she has apparently always wanted to do. It’s refreshing to see these role models encouraging lifestyles other than partying. Hadid admits to loving Barcelona’s nightlife but it seems that many of these models understand the importance of moderation. The girls also spend time with Cody Simpson, Hadid’s on and off boyfriend, as well as Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez. Disney stars also a constant in the media are pipped to the post by models when it comes to allure. The backing of a successful family and having friends in the right circles seems to be propelling these young models to the forefront of ‘celebrity’. However, they all seem to possess that spark that keeps their fans coming back for more. The public just can’t seem to get enough of this lifestyle. Maybe because it’s so different to our own. We find escapism in the lavish appearance of their lives.
