a million reasons to read a book

20,000 passionate book lovers will give away 1,000,000 books on the inaugural World Book Night

This Saturday the 5th of March, the first World Book Night will take place. The night, a celebration of literature and reading, will see one million free books be given away by 20,000 readers. A group of industry professionals, publishers, book sellers and passionate readers, have selected 25 loved and cherished books that they want to see shared with other readers around Britain. World Book Night, attempting to be world’s largest book give away, has received thousands of applications from people wanting to be book givers and attracted support from writers such as J.K Rowling and Seamus Heaney.

These are the books that World Book Night has decided to share:

Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Nqozi Adichie
Case Histories by Kate Atkinson
The Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood
A Life like Other People’s by Alan Bennett
The Spy Who Came in from the Cold by John le Carre
Killing Floor by Lee Child

The final selection of books encompasses all types of fiction “be it historical, literary, crime and commercial as well as poetry, memoir and young adult. Whether a huge bestseller, a prize-winning debut, a lesser known gem or an undisputed classic, it was felt that every book needed to be an accessible work of enduring quality that people would feel passionate about sharing with others.” Book givers will share the book they love with other people, be they reluctant readers or book worms! The books will given away at events, parties and celebrations on the evening of March 5th; many book shops and libraries are extending their opening hours for the occasion.

One of these events is taking place on 4 March in Trafalgar Square. The tourist attraction will be given over to a “glittering celebration of the written word”, with 10,000 people expected to attend. The free event will feature appearances from numerous celebrated authors, ranging from Alan Bennett to Nick Cave, reading from their own favourite books. You can also get involved and stay in the comfort of your own home… World Book Night will be broadcast on BBC2.
